Alwin Kok

BIOGRAPHY

Magically-realistic is the way Alwin Kok refers to his style of painting. Alwin Kok was born on the 16th of October 1954 in Zutphen the Netherlands. He is an autodidact but he took painting classes for six year taught by Henk Schuuringa. Since 1998 Alwin has managed on his own and in a short period of time he has created his own recognizable style with a lot of precision and colours. You can devide his style in to two ways: a realistic representation and a strange and unreal environment.

The first aspect that you will notice when looking at the paintings are the human figures that are often present in the almost timeless, strange or unreal enviroment, with a silhouette of a city or a river landscape in the background .

The second aspect are the townscapes with threatening skies and massive cloud covers.

Alwin Kok

Generally you find strong shadows of buildings and obstacles in a prominent place, these pictures often form a great source of inspiration to Alwin Kok.

The attentive visitor will soon recognise familiar buildings and places in and around Zutphen and Deventer or sometimes other special places. These are very recognizable in the background of the paintings and are painted on a exceptinionally realistic and precise manner.

TECHNIQUE

Kunst schilder

I mainly work with oil paint and with that I only use the basic colours which I sometimes need to blend to get the right end colour.
In the past I used paint a lot on a linen cloth but nowadays I paint more on panel,

this way I can draw the detail better and make it more precise. Occasionally I make my sketches right on the cloth, but more often I make a complete study of some buildings or townscapes on location. I make my sketches and notes, such as the colours that I need on location and than I transfer them onto a cloth in my studio. The sketches on the panel I paint again with a special kind of paint “senna” (brown paint) this way I can still see the lines when I am applying the first “real” layers paint. I apply these layers of paint in the desired colour on to the painting. When this first layer has dried I apply another colour. I continue doing this until I think I have the desired result. Particularly the buildings where I want to show every detail especially the structure of the stones and the cement points. To paint cloud covers requires a lot of attention and patience. When you use the right equipment you can enhance en deepen the colours en surface of the painting.
